DNS is used to resolve human-readable addresses (more correctly hostnames or fully qualified domain names) , such as www.yahoo.com to a machine-useable IP address.
(Sam C, you got it backwards. That's a reverse lookup. But 127.0.0.1 ALWAYS resolves to "localhost".)

in domain name service u can get more space, speed & many other facilities. like- u can not use this mail for business purpose. so u can take the domain name.

through domain name service u can convert server ip address to alphabetic name..........for example yahoo is server when u searching this site u never need type yahoo ip address just type yahoo.com

DNS basically turns your IP address into alphabetical address like a domain name.
So if your IP address was 127.0.0.1 a DNS could turn it into mycomputer.ath.cx or mycomputer.com
www.dyndns.com is a very good FREE DNS server.
