All of these answers are correct but if u look closely at the tape measure you will notice that 19 & 3/8 is also marked this is so that your engeneered floor joist system is spaced properly. studs for your walls and conventional 2 x framing is all on 16" centres whereas your roof is all on 24" centres

Very unfair of Mike Sanders to be so chauvinistic about this question. His comment was so uncalled for as this question was one of the more interesting ones that you find. The answers were very useful and I as well as the asker learned something about markings on tape measures. I cannot recall seeing these diamonds but I shall look out for them in the future and I will now know what they are for.
Have a nice Christmas Warad.

Each stud is 16 inches apart.
Mike Sanders, you dug yourself a hole. Not all women are dumb. And what does driving have to do with anything. There is no need for name calling. Some people answer questions without really reading them properly. I'm hoping this is what Cate did.

That is why you paid the big bucks for the tape measure. Those are expensive art works and have no use other than viewing pleasure.

The reason for that is, did you know that the studs in house wall is 16" apart? That's done to help housing contractors.
