The origin of this belief is that metal in a microwave oven produces sparks, and mobile phones emit microwave radiation, therefore they could also cause metal objects to emit sparks and ignite petrol vapour. However the microwave radiation used by mobile phones is far too low-powered for this to happen. Have you ever seen sparks from a metal object when you're making a call nearby? Thought not.

The only way it can happen is if a spark comes from somewhere inside the phone, like the battery. Which is very unlikely.

This is not gasoline but a lighter in someones pocket, i was sitting in a waiting room one day opposite a man when a mobile started to ring in his pocket a few seconds later there was a bang and smoke coming out of this mans pocket, the lighter had exploded in his pocket where his mobile phone was.
A different occasion was a petrol driven pickup backed down a ramp into a LPG Gas bottling deport many years ago and ignited the leaking Gas sending Gas bottles exploding into the air, and a major fire of Gas.
