Yes, animals have a brain and therefore they can think. They are not robots controlled by someone with a remote. An animal isn't clever enough to think the way a human does, yet they are clever in their own ways. An animals instinct is to eat and sleep, so that's what they will do, but choosing what to eat and where to sleep is from their mind! :)

What do you call a mind? Animals have brains,
and their brains have functions, the trick is in
trying to find out how similar their brain functions
are to ours. This is just as difficult as trying to
figure out what another person is thinking, if not
more difficult. Another person can tell you what
he is thinking, but how do you know he is telling
the truth?
It is obvious that other animals can remember
individuals, recognize them after not seeing them
for a time (sometimes a long time) and solve
certain kinds of problems, especially if they are
of a kind they normally encounter in the wild. The
kind of animal makes a difference. Obviously the
most human-like minds are in the most human-like
animals, the other apes. The orangutan, according
to one researcher, is an even better problem-
solver than the chimpanzee. Small animals such
as insects have small brains with less capacity.
Much of their behavior is programmed into their
nervous systems and can not be altered much.
An example is certain wasps which develop in
underground cells constructed by their mother.
When they mature they dig their way up to the
surface. If you put a jar upside down over the
nest the young wasp emerges into the jar and
can not get out. It is entirely capable of digging
its way out under the edge of the jar, but its
digging instinct is turned off when it emerges into
the light. To it, it is already out and doesn't need
to dig any more. It will die under the jar without
trying to escape by digging.

What an offensive question. Some of my best friends are animals, and they would bite/claw/maul/throw poo at you if they ever met you.
