Democratically elected governments are fine if they cow-tow to the US. Kissinger's argument for having Democratically elected Salvadore Allande murdered and Pinochet made dictator was to save the Chilian ppl from themselves. The same reason John Foster & Allen Dullas had the elected government of Jocobo Arbenze overthrown, and their puppet put in place in 1952, resulting in the deaths of over 100,000 Guatamalins in the following 10 years at the hands of CIA backed death squads. Thank God , Chavez, has been reelected in Venezuala, since he has the support of so many western countries, it will be difficult for the US to run rough shod over him.

The United States is the only super power left in this world. The rest of the world depends on American financial aid, and America's military presence.
While many people rant that America is a self serving bully, very few in the global community reject our aid or military strength when they need it.
Do we have interests outside of our own borders? Of course we do, and if we even tried to practice Isolationism, the rest of the world would then rant and rave that we were being selfish, and not sharing our wealth with the rest of the world.
America is a Republic, not a Democracy.

American mega-interventions (Iraq, Afghanistan), have been a disaster. Time to stop, I agree. The rest of the world sees the incongruity of supporting "democracy" but denying legitimacy of the elections in Palestine, for example.

Isolation will be a product of inteference in political affairs of other countries if the international community will make a boycott.
