It is the story of Anna Leonowens, a stiff English schoolteacher who came to Siam in the 1860s to teach the children of King Mongkut. Like all women usually do, taking advantage of his affection for her, she becomes involved in all of his affairs, from the tragic dilemma of a young concubine to trying to forge an alliance with Britain to a war with Burma that is orchestrated by Britain. In the meantime, a subtle romance develops between them. Unbelievable bullshit.

British widow Anna and young son, Louis, go to Siam at the request of its king in order to educate his 58 young heirs in the ways of the West. King Mongkut's tradition of monarchists rule built upon dynasties of arrogance, intimidation and disrespect. Anna is a strong willed woman who is totally against this. This creates conflict between them which softens over time as Anna and the king get to know each other, like each other and learn more about the cultural differences that make them who they are. Therelationship gets more complicated when theres a plot to destroy the royal family which threatens not only their friendship, but the future of a nation.

An old-fashioned historical romance (precisely the kind "they don't make anymore") based on the (supposedly) true story of the 19th century British governess whose story was told in The King and I. Anna Leonowens (Jodie Foster) is hired to tutor the children of the King of Siam (Chow Yun-Fat), but ends up giving their monarch father a lesson in ruling with compassion. Adapted from Leonowens' two books Romance of the Harem and The English Governess at the Court of Siam.

- 1860s British teacher is hired by King of Siam to teach his children
-king does not give teacher the house he promised her, teacher threatens to leave, teacher does not
-teacher and king have many disagreements on how a country should be run, which shocks court officials and other subjects
-king and teacher gradually learn to respect each other, teacher gets the house she wanted, king and teacher start to fall in love
-teacher is shocked when the king failed to stop what was basically an immoral execution of two lovers, teacher decides to leave Siam
-teacher hears about a plot to assassinate the king
-teacher decides to stay in Siam and helps the royal family escape
- assassination attempt is thwarted, king's life is protected, monarchy continues
-teacher eventually leaves Siam, but many of Victorian England's values are passed on to the crown prince of Siam, who later becomes king

It should be noted that the teacher who wrote the 'memoirs' this story was based on make almost everything up, all stage and Hollywood versions of this story are also horrendously inaccurate. The BOOK that you are asking about is actually called 'Anna and the King of Siam', and it is also appreciably different from any of the movies
