Personal idea: also, I think that since he was Greek, and there were many groups throughout France, he was preferred compared to the ones from mainland, since they (or their families) could have been allies with the throne.
In addition, during the fighting in Corsica he got great experience, which in combination with his ambition to power was a factor to be supported by most groups!
Even church was not against him, although he often wrote about their thirst for money and power!
