i have 4 ceiling lights and i wish to operate them from 3 wall switches independently.

You need a two way switch at the active end a two way switch at the switched end and an intermediate switch in the middle with straps connecting them all together correctly depending on the make of the switch.
Now if you don't understand any of that then you should call an electrician.

It can be done !
Basically, two of the switches must be three way. You can have as many four way switches in between the two three ways.

If you don't know what you're doing call an electrician !
