Take a look to this website:

In this website you will be able to see how the tennis season works. There are several tournaments throughout the year. Of course that the most important are those that have the most prize money for the players. Tennis is a year round sport!!! That is why players have to choose the tournaments that best fit their abilities and physical condition. (The average number of tournaments played by a professional ranges between 25 and 30).

The season starts in January (or even late December) with some warm-up tournaments for the Australian Open. It finishes with the end of season Masters Cup, which took place a few weeks ago. However, the Davis Cup final took place last weekend and there will be smaller tournaments running all year. But this period is the nearest the top players get to a proper break without just missing tournaments in the middle of the year.

The tennis season starts with the Australian Open in Melbourne in January and the 2007 tournament starts 0n the 15th to the 28th of January and ends with the Masters Cup around the end of October and early November. The Masters Cup will continue to be played in Shanghai until 2008.
Whilst the Masters Cup can be said to be the tennis finale, the season usually comes to an end with the Davis Cup finals in December. So in a way, tennis runs throughout the year.

Mat353 is right - that's why most of the best players spend the season injured.

That's also probably the reason nobody realises there's a break in the tennis season at all......

pretty much runs all year - first few days of Jan to mid-early November for most players and up to early Dec if you're in the Davis cup final (RUS vs. ARG just ended Sunday).

obviously you can choose tournaments to enter although your ranking/race points and prize money will be on the line. also some tournaments such as Grand Slams and master series events are mandatory for top players with very little leeway. also some top players will take several (3-4) weeks off mid-year right after wimbledon.

see next year's schedule below. most will be playing in one of 3 tournaments (Chennai/Doha/Adelaide) on 1st of Jan to prepare for Australian Open!!
