An interesting twist on the vampire story is 'I Am Legend' by Richard Mathieson.
If you want to read occult/witchcraft/bizarre type stories buy an anthology of H.P. Lovecraft stories (he wrote short stories and there are many different collections available). Influences on Lovecraft included the Welsh writer Arthur Machen. His work can sometimes be hard to find, but 'The Great God Pan' is a good starter. Don't forget to try stuff by Edgar Allen Poe, mind you. These should keep you going. They aren't exactly like Rice or Kenyon. In fact, they were probably influences on these two writers, but they are all writers of Gothic fiction and will give you a wider scope for reading. I would particularly recommend 'I Am Legend' though. Happy reading.

Try taking a historical research aspect to this. Go looking for stories of real witches and wizards, and their lives.

Believe me, it will be a major eye-opener. Truth really is stranger than fiction, but more in this area than any other.

Zanoni, by Edward Bulwer Lytton. Read it by all means, but beware The Dweller on the Threshold. Once you have read about him he will haunt you for the rest of your days.
