I think that weddings certainly do contribute to the economy as there is such a thriving business based around weddings, such as caterers, planners, florists, wedding dress makers, etc.

It depends on one's decision. Scarcity and abundance exist side by side in this world. If one plan to marry, preparation is necessary. Televised programs are affordable to the elite groups only, hence they advertise materials connected with the wedding to consumers. It helps economic growth if you want to think it that way.
