My 6 day old baby girl has been big on smiling since day one.
I've heard it's just gas.

I have heard gas.. My mother says it's angels telling the infant jokes... My grandmother says it's angels tickling the baby...

While my mother and grandmother have very cute ideas that paint a picture of happiness and comfort... I really think it's gas....

I've always thought that it's the baby adjusting to life outside the womb. There's a lot of nervous system adjustments to be made in that little body. My son -he's 3 weeks- smiles off and on, but he also twitches a lot, gets a lot of hiccups, likes to shake his hand and sometimes his leg shakes like a dog getting his tummy scratched. These are all involuntary things caused by a nervous system still adjusting to stimuli. As much as I'd like to take credit for the smiles, I know it's not me.... yet. When your baby smiles at you for real the first time, you'll know!

Know that a newborn has two principal means of communicating: smiling and crying. She'll cry when she's in pain or discomfort and learn to smile when she is comfortable. Notice that her first smiles will probably come fleetingly as she sleeps, in her first week of life. Watch her smile change: In her second week she'll probably smile with her eyes open, usually after feeding. She may have a glassy, faraway look.See her develop: In the third or fourth week, she'll probably have mastered a social smile, responding to your voice and making eye contact.

She could be mimicing you but odds are at this early age it is probably gas or involuntary movement. Whatever it is, it is beautiful !!

Up until they are about 2-4 months old, that strange little grin is usually gas. You will know when she actively starts smiling at you.

Cranky people say that. Babies smile for the same reason the rest of us do -- they're happy. You must be doing a good job with her. Congratulations!
