how would you describe yourself to someone you had never met, without telling them about your physical qualities?

I think who we are and how we define ourselves changes constantly. However, if I were to tell you about myself as an individual right now, I would say this:

I am intelligent, inclined at times toward arrogance. I believe in honour and respect above all else. I value intelligent and accurate communication (at times to a pedantic degree). I'm not afraid to admit my faults, but I remain confident in and comfortable with myself. I can be alternately stubborn and flexible - I learn from others, and my own mistakes. I'm complicated, so I'm open to e-mails from people who want to know more. Methinks my avatar tells about the physical stuff, anyway, so even now that isn't side-stepped.

Hope this satisfies your curiosity. Now it's your turn. :)

My 360 page describes me one way, the Q&A page here another, so I have made various attempts to define myself in a few words. But I'll try again:

I am almost a senior citizen, but not quite. If I am to make no reference to my physical qualities, at least my position in space/time should be relevant. I am a resident of Boulder Creek, California, which is a comfortable home for me. Anyone who knows BC would thus have a pretty good picture of me when I say I'm an aging hippie who went "undercover" for many years as a legal secretary. By many people's definitions, I am a witch, and sometimes call myself that pesky old witch who reads the Bible, because I spend a lot of time on religious and philosophical matters. I am a bookaholic and have a large DVD collection that means a lot to me, and would reveal much of who I am if you read the titles.

I am single, divorced, and widowed, by various interpretations. I live alone, but my upstairs neighbor is also my surrogate daughter, so I am not particularly lonely. And I am very much attached to the community I have come to know through Yahoo! Answers and 360.

I'm still alive, unlike a lot of people I've met. I'm honest, funny, and happy most the time. I give love without care, and am used to emotional pain that comes with that. I love to give and help others, and thoroughly enjoy doing so. I am a good listener, and love to talk and share experiences. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve, although I try not to I can't control it. I sometimes forget that my physical appereance effects how others see me. I'm not shy, although weary of people, as many have let me down before.

You define who you are yourself, you alone are responsible for your own actions whether they turn out not as expected, there are risks inlife and part of being self confident is taking those risks.. others may get the wrong perception of you altogether, if you are saying one thing and your body language another, very confusing all round but positivity and self confidence go hand in hand.

Without the corporeal carapace of physicality?

Well, I guess I would do a very human thing and assume the person I was speaking to was in possession of the same basic emotions most people are burdened with.

Did I say "burdened"?
What's that say about me?

I'm a vegetarian, I rescue animals, I was a teacher and researcher but I have a disease now that doesn't permit me to work. Instead I try to help animals and people who seem to need it. I continue to educate myself on a diversity of subjects, and am lonely while being independent at the same time.

I'd describe myself with words. But, I think what defines me as a person is my third nostril.
