The Deer Hunter,
2001: A Space Odessey (Highly recommended),
Eraserhead (Not to everyones taste, but IS unusual)
Koyanistqatsi (Time lapse Photography, stunning visuals (especially the derelict cityscapes and the Boeing 747 that "bends back on itself") and music)
Alien Resurrection
Schindler's List
Repulsion
I would recommmend Vertical Limit, the scenery and action in that is great.

My favorite type of movie too! Try these:
A River Runs Through It (amazing Montana scenery)
Dances with Wolves (also great scenery)
Escape from Alcatraz (high-quality escapist entertainment)
Meet Joe Black (strong visual style with a top-notch script)

Last of the Mohicans is an excellent film for drama and scenery. Paris Texas has great desert and city (Houston) landscapes (although the film is a bit arty for most tastes). The same goes for Wings of Desire (same director but this time in Berlin).

try any film that's directed by Tim Burton..... in my opinion, he is the master of modern atmospheric films.... the first batman film, sleepy hollow..... most of them have a very dark, almost gothic feel to them, which i love. another film that is very impressive to watch is The Crow.. i love it when brandon lee is running over the rooftops of the city... and the last one that i would recommend is Dark city... the scenery, atmosphere and just about everything is very impressive.... kiether sutherland, jennifer connelly and richard o'brien all star in it.... not a very well known film, but totally worth watching.

Don't know if you'll like it, but if you enjoyed The Talented Mr Ripley I strongly suggest you watch Ripley's Game with John Malkovick and Ray Winstone-brilliant.

After Dark My Sweet with Rachel Ward and Jason Patric
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098994/
At Close Range with Sean Penn and Christopher Walken
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090670/
They are both directed by James Foley, who is very underrated.
