Swing application
The Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) API for database access
APIs for audio capture, processing, and playback
Plugins, which enable applets to be run in Web browsers
Platform independence
Automatic garbage collection
Stand-alone application
Servlet
Applet

Primary Goals

There were five primary goals in the creation of the Java language:
It should use the object-oriented programming methodology.
It should allow the same program to be executed on multiple operating systems.
It should contain built-in support for using computer networks.
It should be designed to execute code from remote sources securely.
It should be easy to use by selecting what was considered the good parts of other object-oriented languages.

Learn everything you can about programming conventions then apply them as they are in Java to the best of your ability. Things like algorithm development, code cleanliness, data manipulation and encapsulation, etc. are just some of the different aspects that you should focus on. Make sure you have clear, concise, easy-to-understand code and all should fall into place.

Take up the Certified Java Programmer exam from Sun Microsystems. You pay the money and you force yourself to study about it.

This is by far the most effective way to help you master the knowledge.

First of all as a fresher u need to be strong on core java skills , after that u need to be strong in the areas like jsp, servlets and any one of the servers. these days it will be benificial if you know about any IDE like netbeans, Eclipse etc.

How to program with it.

Basically, once you know how to code in a particular language, you can code in that language. As long as you understand how Java works, then that's all there is to know.
