A blade switch that you have to throw a handle has lubrication on the blades.
Contacts points in a contactor are dry.
If you close the contactor before you sent volts throw it with an agastat (A timer relay).
You would have volt free contacts.
You will not get the fine arcing that ends up burning up the contact points.

A dry contact just means there is no voltage potential coming from it. It is switching something external, closing or opening another potential.
I've never heard of a volt free contact but it sounds much like the same.
