Distant cousins can marry legally. If you have ever done any study of the British royal family, they are almost all distant cousins.
In the US, you can't marry if you are a second cousin or closer. Any farther than that, and it's a perfectly legal, if kind of weird thing. I'd really rather my family tree forked as it went up, but that's me.

The U.S. is virtually alone among developed nations in outlawing marriage among first cousins. European countries have no such prohibition. In some cultures, particularly Islamic ones, first-cousin marriage is encouraged. First cousin marriage is currently illegal or restricted in 31 states. (Some states allow it if there's no chance of procreation, i.e. California and New York.

It's been thought that first cousins would produce a half-wit child. My brother married our first cousin and they had a perfectly normal child.

absolutely. first cousins too. albert einstein married his first cousin, and his parents were first cousins. scientifically, the probability of a birth defect is only about 3% higher for their children, lower than that of a woman who has children over the age of 40.

in many societies, it's normal to marry a cousin. americans just think it's "gross," like how we think not showering is gross even though for most of human history people didn't take showers.

Jats,Rajputs via custom, do no longer marry distant cousins. it sort of feels there could desire to be no kinship/relationship for seven generations before, for marriage. The castes in North India are maximum inflexible in such issues. it is in contradiction to what 90sZeitgest! mentioned (i think of he's conversing by using' his hat).

Sure why not. It's their own life, we have no right to interfere. They can do what they want. Quite honestly, it'll be their fault if they have disabled babies though.
