Its a very subjective question and something that it is difficult to be objective about.
It all depends on whether you are a Cat or a Dog person. Cats are less needy for companionship (generally) and Dogs are very caring. The case for kittens and puppies is the same but with a cuteness factor of a million!
(For what its worth my preference is a kitten)

yes, cats are more independent. the only things bad about a cat is the litter box, hair and fleas.
a puppy pees and poos on your floor, they get fleas but are easier to control. puppies are like a child, they need alot of care

cats are fun but they will p*i*s*s on everything .. male cats that is when they get to a certain age and lemme tell you it could gag a maggot its their way of marking their territory.. unless you have them spayed or neutered.. females aint so bad they can just get pregnant which they can do often and will if given the chance so beware .. unless they are fixed.. dogs will not mark the house as territory if they are properly house trained.. and to do that just make them a box just big enough for them to stand up and turn around in .. it cant be any bigger because the dog will have to sleep in this.. and a dogs instincts is to not use the bathroom where he/she sleeps.. if its big enough for them to walk around in they will go to one side and urinate/poop and sleep on the other defeating the purpose for the box.. only let them out to eat and soon as they finish eating take them outside and stay there till they "go" . Then bring them back in put them back in the box, dont play with them or anything which I know is hard to do .. because they will whine.. you have to show the pup who is the boss cause if you take him out .. the whole thing isnt gonna work.. I breed boxers.. so I know what Im talking about here. This whole training period should last about 2 weeks.. sometimes 3 if the dog is stubborn .. and yes I know its hard its a new puppy and you'll wanna play with him.. BUT DONT till you've finished the kennel box training . It will make a lot better pet in the long run plus you wont be cleaning up the messes and having your house smell like a truckstop bathroom. after a few days the dogs whines will calm down .. Then he'll only whine when hes hungry or when he needs to be taken outside. kinda like a baby that cries when its hungry or needs a diaper change.. moms you can atest to this if you baby them.. they will always take advantage of you.. same way with the dog.. be stern and let them be, its not cruel as long as you keep them fed and watered... but after about two weeks the dog will have learned that when he/she has the urge to "go" ...they go outside.. so they go to the door and wait. will save you loads of dirty clean ups.. specially if its a big dog who can crap like a horse and pee about 3 gallons ..lol well it will seem like it if you have to clean up.. but once the 2 weeks is up let them out and then begin loving and playing with them.. hope to help all you people looking into getting a dog that was weary of leaving them outside just because they are hard to housebreak.. because they really arent hard to housebreak at all.. just takes a couple weeks and learning what is a sympathy whine and a i gotta go whine..lol good luck !

Depends whether you're a cat or a dog, a dog having a kitten might be surprised.
(Just joking)
Either one is nice but they are both a responsibility and depends on whether you like cats or dogs.

they are both great but it all depends on how much time you can give them.. they are not dolls.. they really need time and attention and you can't allow yourself to get tired of them...
If you have less time you could prefer a kitten since they need less attention then puppies..

I love puppy more personally, but they grow to be so big! And when I look at their eyes, it kind of just melts you, really expressive eyes.

I think kittens are easier to look after when they are younger and older for that matter.
