I've been gluten-free since January 2006. It doesn't have to be as hard as some people are saying. It's a big learning curve at first. It's something that is much easier if you have a lot of support. In fact, if you don't have support, I don't know how you'd figure everything out.
There are a few great message boards where you can learn everything you need to know. Here are my favorites.
www.glutenfreeforum.com
www.celiacforums.com
Glutenfreeforum has over 11 THOUSAND people registered there. My advice is to go there and read through the archives. I learned everything I know about gluten-free on that message board. It took me a couple of months to learn everything and be comfortable with it. After that, it's actually been pretty easy.
When you get this gluten-free thing dropped in your lap along with only minimal, if any, information, it can be overwhelming. But by summertime, you'll be an expert.

Gluten is the protein found in the grains wheat, barley, rye and oats, and the products made with them
This is a great resource:

Link to safe and forbidden food list:

It might seem overwhelming at first, figuring out what you can and can't eat, but if you make a shopping list of safe things (i.e. fruits, vegetables, rice, potatoes, fresh meats, poultry, and fish (with nothing added to them like glazes or marinades, etc.) nuts) and stick with those things until you become more familiar with the gluten free diet and harmful ingredients, you can expand on that as you go along.
There are a lot of packaged gluten free foods, and items labeled "gluten free" at health food stores, some even have a gluten free shopping list available at the customer service desk, that will help to get you started. Some main stream grocery stores are also starting to carry gluten free items.
Good luck!

This is TOUGH! I was also told I have to be on a gluten free diet. Your doctor should tell you what to avoid.
Wheat, flour, pasta, bread, ketchup, mustard, certain salad dressings, certain cheeses, cereal with any wheat in it, grains. This is just a brief list. But please Google this search in "gluten free diet".
Also google what is gluten. Just to make sure you understand it.
You can have, rice, potato bread, gluten free pasta, fresh salad dressing, NO BREAD!! Meats. Sounds fun hu?
There are many websites that sell gluten free items. Pasta, bread, cake mixes etc.
