It sounds like a glitch in the game. There's nothing you can do, so you'll have to probably buy a new game...
Some games have glitches like that and I've read a few in the pokemon games that is activated after a period of time. I recently found my ruby to freeze in the first area when you face team magma.

try buying a new gameboy pokemon game or if u are useing computer...ur file might be corrupted

try cleaning your system and game, a can of air, special made kit to clean, something like that, if it stil acts up either the thing is really dirty and getting bad, or it is crapped out and you are out of luck

i would say the game is ****** it cant be the game boy its self but its worf a try takr it into a game shop and say to them what your problem is and they will give you some tips on what to do
