So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.
Why haven't we heard from them?
Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.
Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.
Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.
Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.
Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.
It is really impossible to know for sure.
The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

numbers involved in this Q are immense. I assume you are not limiting life to intelligence only. We have discovered in the past few decades that life is the delicate fragile thing we thought it was. We have found life here on earth in unimaginable extreme condition. Thriving in boiling sulfuric acid. loving extreme depths in the ocean proliferating near vents at the bottom of the oceans in the total absence of light and oxygen. We are looking for evidence on Mars but there are other candidates in the solar system located way out there on the moons of Jupiter. Expeditions are been planed. Given the statistics it is only a matter of time before this question is definitely answered. The search is very complicated and difficult but we are refining it all the time. We will find life sooner or later.

The sooner humankind understands what "life" really is, the sooner they (we) will realise that the search for "intelligent" life in the universe is futile.
We are not in the "oldest" part of the universe, right? So, it would seem reasonable that, since the age of the universe is measured in gazillions (technical term) of years, if there was an intelligent life form "out there", it would have discovered / invented a way of travelling through time, and/or space to visit us, right?
Even if they have already visited us, it would seem that they didn't find our environment terribly appealing, or I am sure they would have the means of annihilating us, and would have done so before we even came into existence.
Time and space are figments of our primitive minds. There is a far deeper reason we are here. As soon as I discover it, I will let you know.

Life as we know it can only exist, in our solar system, in the area currently occupied by earth. That is why there is no other life in our solar system. Unless of course it is some type of microorganism floating around on mars or under water on one of Jupiter's moons.
There are billions of stars/suns in our galaxy alone, and there are countless other galaxies floating around out there each with billions of stars/suns. I could not see how anyone could say that it was impossible for life to exist elsewhere. I believe that in all likely hood, it does.

i've got talked to my chum approximately this and if I bear in mind wisely he says the bible does no longer point out something approximately existence on different planets how ever if there is obviously god created them so it could no longer in any way bypass against the christian faith except you have self assurance god did no longer create them. I on the different hand don't have self assurance in god and think of it quite is naive to think of have been the only planet with existence on it. There must be some variety of existence available wether they have alien craft or they are basically small creatures like a dogs I have no clue yet there must be some variety of existence available. I bear in mind some years in the past analyzing some planet i think of close to a megastar in the super dipper that replaced into supposedly around the comparable length as our planet and relating to the comparable distance away and the megastar replaced into relating to the comparable length as our sunlight that they had pronounced they observed some thing blue on the planets similiar to earths water and there gave the look to be land lots like our continents however the telescopes could no longer supply plenty extra element how ever I havn't heard something approximately that on account that. My concept is they found data of existence there and are keeping that know-how faraway from us like roswell in no way got here approximately.

I forget who said it, but it goes something like this. 'Only humans would be arrogant enough to believe that they are the ONLY life forms in the universe.'
I love it. Think, just for a minute. We cannot even conceive the thought of infinity. Yet, there are still people who think we are the only life there is. The universe goes on forever. Is there life out there? To answer that we would have to believe that the universe does not revolve around us. Personally, I don't think it does. I believe there is other, smarter life beyond our conception.
