Ok I have a rock with 4 minerals in it. 35% is A, 10% is B, 15% is C, and 40% is D. All I care about is the Copper bearing minerals which would include C and D. How would I go about normalizing C and D to 100% so that I can work with just them? I know this should be really easy but its late and I have no math book or time to search the web. Help? Thanks very much!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'normalizing' them. If you mean treating them as if they were the total composition of the rock, then just subtract 45% of the mass of the rock to get the total amount of C and D. Now, since 15% of the original mass is C and 40% was D, they will still be in the ratio of 15/40 and the % of C will be 15/55*100 = 27.27% and the % of D will be
40/55*100 = 72.72%.

Hope that helps.

Not entirley sure of your question. This is what i'd do though.

Make a 100 gram...mole...whatever you are dealing with...basis

I'll just say grams
So component C is 15 grams and D is 40 grams. Just deal with it like that then you can extrapolate your answer back to the beginning.

Or...
make C & D = 100 grams
15+40 = 55
so you have 15/55 *100 grams of C
and 40/55 *100 grams of D.

I think the second one after thinking about it makes more sense...but i'll leave them both in. I normally go with the first approach..but it depends on waht type of calculations you ahve to do. Both will work.

If you mean you're interested only in the proportion of C to D, which is 15 to 40, then the percentages (of C or D in the total of C and D) are
100%*15/(15+40) and 100%*40/(15+40).

But if you're interested in the proportions of C to D to the rest, which is 15 to 40 to 45, then the percentages are of course
15%, 40% and 45%.
