YES density is mass/volume and when a substance melts its volume changes since volume of a substance is different generally in its solid, liquid and gas phases and mass remains same so its density changes.but change in density and amount of change depends on the particular material.For example density of water decreases on melting and on boiling density of a material always decreases.

Yes, it does. Imagine this: if you put a coke in the freezer, and the bottle is made of glas, then it will explode. Why? Because the density of glad is greater than water density. This is not the most common case, usually density lows, but its an example from the real life.

Another way to check that: put some pieces of ice in a glass of water. They will float. So do the icebergs... Remember the Titanics!
