I think that decision belongs entirely to black people; they are the ones who rightfully should decide what is okay and not okay, regarding words/issues relating to their race. If there was danger of hurting even one person's feelings, though, why risk it? I would like to think that one day the word will be completely reclaimed and will evoke only empowerment, not racism--but sadly, I don't think we're quite to that point yet. Until that day (if it ever comes), I will not use that word under any circumstances, because I have too much respect for anyone whom it might offend.

I think we should all wake up and take some responsibility, and have enough intelligence to realize and admit none of us should use the word! Ever! Blacks and whites together. This is a word that needs to die, and never be a part of any ethnic vocabulary.

as long as it isn't used as a racial slurr then there is no problem and the person in which the controversy was angry and it was used in a manner that an be seen as very racist and hurtful to others.
