Yet they don't do a single thing to change it? They give in to the same commercialism that they claim to hate so much.

If you are truly anti-commercialism, why not focus primarily on the non-commercialism and avoid whatever it is you hate? Or is the commercialism so steeped in tradition that people don't know how to have Christmas without it? You really can't have your cake and eat it too, so you have to decide would you rather complain or actually do something about it to make it more pleasant to you?

Great question. I've heard this whining as long as I can remember. Sometimes I think those that complain do so for their own pleasure. If it bothers themselves, they can certainly control their own Christmas experience. I'll concede that the religious meaning may not be as prevalent as it was in previous times, but so what. The so-called commercialism is good for the economy, and most of it is geared towards children. Is this such a bad thing? Noone forces anyone to become obsessed with purchasing gifts for everyone. I love the season--the good and bad--and just consider part of the whole package. It's not that hard to control your thoughts. I'm guessing most of the complainers complain about Halloween, Easter, and other holidays, too.
Again, those that do the complaining have every opportunity to shape the holiday in the way they want it to be.
Merry Christmas.

I worked in retail off and on for over 20 years. In the last few years, I hated the commercialism of Christmas. It was sick seeing people buy crap just to have something to give. And the customers were especially mean to the store staff at that time of year too!

What did I do so I could stop complaining about the commercialism? I quit working in retail. Now I actually have the time and the energy to make Christmas cookies!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

People in fairly well to do countries have a level of greed and material attachment instilled in them. Children are constantly exposed to these ideas of a commercial Christmas, and so they grow up with this idea. Those that complain about the holiday are not willing to act and change it until everyone around them does, and those that do have Christmas without including the commercialism are not going to be complaining because they have already fixed the situation

I have been one to complain about this topic before. It does really bother me. I live alone and do not have any children; so you would think it would be easier. But, unless your whole family wants to participate in a non-commercial Christmas, it kind of would make me look like a horrible person. If I show up at my parents house without any gifts for my nieces, nephews, etc, my family would not view it as me taking a stand on an important issue; they would think of me as a cheap and selfish person. I really enjoy giving gifts. It's just that I've experienced so many financial setbacks during the last few years that I hate taking myself down to literally the last dollar during the holidays or spending money that I do not have. It just seems that every year, stores prepare for Christmas earlier and earlier and everyone in my family tries to outdo one another. When will it ever stop? This year, we did make some progress. Many people in my family have experienced finanical issues this past year and we picked names on Thanksgiving and just buy for the children in the family. This did help alleviate some financial burdern; but it is still hard since I live paycheck to paycheck. As I said again, I enjoy giving gifts. I just wish I would feel comfortable giving gifts that are in my price range instead of squeezing myself to the limit.

I believe these people do not have the backbone to stand up for what they believe. People these days just go with the flow never truly knowing what they believe or why they believe in it. It's really sad that people do stuff just because they seen on T.V., Web,etc.
It's like "HELLOOO, wake up, you do have a mind and soul, please use it." And...you know Christmas isn't the biggest money maker holiday, it's Mother's Day! Too many people just don't get it and there's nothing we can do except help out one person at a time.

For me--it's that I hate the true meaning of Christmas gets lost in all the other stuff. For my family, we do exchange gifts--but that is secondary to the real celebration of our faith.
What do I do to change it?? Make sure my family spends time at church, doing charity work etc. I make sure to invite my friends and family to do the same. We only give 3 gifts to each other--symbolizing the three gifts brought to Jesus when He was born.

It's true...people complain that walmart said Happy Holidays instead of Merry christmas. Why should they care if they dont want to buy into the commericalism?

I am doing my bit to change it by ignoring Christmas altogether. It will be just ordinary day for me though there will be some good films on tv!

Yeah... a smoker, a car-owner should not complain about air pollution either.
