I was told i was not allowed to do them for the first six weeks of post partum.
However my six weeks is up in like a week, and I got tired of sitting around looking at my flubby tummy, so I started with some low impact low cardio workouts, like belly dancing etc. Something that isn't going to get your heart going way to fast, but still gives you the toning of the body.
You should ask your obgyn though as to what you can and cannot do. Im not supposed to be doing anything right now because for the last two months of my preg. i was on bedrest.

You can do kegels from day one.. don't over do it just 25 a day to start and work up to 200 over a week or so...
http://www.childbirth.org/articles/kegel.html
Start walking as soon as you feel up to it (day 2-3) Even after a c-section walk a bit each day to limber up muscles and get your blood flowing... It will help you feel healthier even if its just 1 mile a day...
You can do stomach tightening exercises after about a week... Not sit-ups or crunches but sit up straight in a chair with your feet placed firmly on the ground 12-18 inches apart keep your back straight and tighten your abdomenal muscles hold 5-10 seconds and release keep breathing repeat 10- 15 times working up to 25-50 times.. This will help you strengthen your abdomenal muscles so when you are ready for crunches sit-ups after your 6 week check up your stomach muscles are already partially toned...
Do leg lifts/squats after about a week or so... stand with your back straight next to a chair or table lift one leg so your thigh is parralell to the ground hold 5-10 seconds place it on the floor and squat (use chair or tabe for balance) stand up and repeat with other leg.... do about 10-25 of these work up to more if you can...
Also do some stretching and other limbering exercises...
If a certain exercise hurts stop doing it for a day or so... Then try it again..
You don't want to run or job or do impact exercises as you are still healing inside but stretching and tightening of muscles can be done almost right away as long as you remember not to over do it and listen to your body....
After your 6 week check-up and getting the all clear you can do more strenuous exercises and if you have done the limberings. tightening and stretching you will be more ready to start the more strenuous stuff...
Also remember you do have a perfect weight for doing some exercises (your baby) my kids used to love it when I would hold them and do crunches or use them like free weights lifting them up and down above me .... I also used to play the push-up game with my kids laying them so everytime I did a push-up I gave them a kiss or nibble... Listening to your child giggling can make a work out go by fast... I also got a jogging stroller after the 6 weeks and would take the kids out for a jog with me (Just remember you need an area without many stones and pretty level ground while jgging the stroller gets moving pretty quickly and a spill for either you or the stroller can be bad... Also look for a stroller with shock absorbers so baby has a cushioned non bumpy ride....

The best person to ask that is your ob-gyn. She or he knows your overall health and how much stress you had during birth. Usually you can do mild exercise like walking almost immediately. but if you have had a caesarian, any vigorous exercise might need to be put off until you are fully healed. Ask the doc.
Have lots of fun with your baby.

I would suggest waiting at least 6 weeks. I had a C-section and it took me about 3 months before I could really do any kind of cardio. I started walking after 6 weeks but I couldn't do any of my Taebo until 3 months. Don't get into a rush. Let your body heal first.

Depending on the type of birth, complications, etc. My hospital gave me a sheet of exercises to start right in the hospital! It was a bit rough, but there were different stages, for the first few weeks, and recommendations to follow your doctor's directions.
It will also vary, depending on your pre & during pregnancy levels of activity.

My doctor said at about six weeks that I was ready to start losing weight. Every woman heals differently, but some signs that you are ready are that the bleeding and discharge has completely stopped and your uterus has shrunk back to its close to normal size. If your body is not healed and you strain it you could end up back at the beginning of the healing process. One sign that you are not ready is if bledding and discharge return or become heavier.
