The purpose behind being a reporter is that it gives him easy access to areas and tips a "regular job" wouldn't. Plus he can use it as an excuse for being late, having to hurry out, and other mysterious actions. Plus it allows him to earn a living while being a superhero, another thing that a "regular job" wouldn't (imagine if he tried disappearing for hours at a time if he was a school teacher, they'd fire his *** in a heartbeat!)

The purpose is that he cane be in the newsroom while reports about crimes, disasters, etc., are coming in over the wire services (these days, the internet) and he can duck into his private office to say he's writing a story about it, then go fly out the window to save the say. Effectively, it helps him help other people by letting him know where his super help is needed quickly, in an area which will allow him to slip away to 'cover the story'.

One of the biggest laughs in the whole series (especially in the early days) was when Lois would strand Clark somewhere, or get him stuck covering some flower show, while she went and put herself in danger to investigate some wrongdoing or dangerous event. Then Clark would slip away, change to Suiperman, save the day, rescue Lois, and get back in time to cover the other story (at super speed) and tell Lois that Superman stopped by and gave him the exclusive story when she saw him back at the newsroom.

Clarck Kent was a reporter for the High School Newspaper in Smallsville. When he left for Metropolis, that is what he had allways wanted to do, so he went to work for The Daily Planet.

He is the first person on the scene if there is a problem and he knows it before anyone else does. Also, he can be "out on assignment" when he is really flying around helping people.
