I often feel sorry for children who are indoctrinated into religions, especially religions that seem more repressive than others. What do you think?

I didn't mean to offend anyone. I merely used "Amish" as a personal example I am familiar with. Gee, some people are awfully sensitive here! To elaborate a bit... to what extent do you think children are free to chose their own way of life when their parents and community more or less force a religion on them from birth? I'd really like to know. Thanx

There is no such thing as a free child.

What religion are you? Are you free?
Amish is a religion. The children there get to choose to stay Amish or to leave when they become a teenager. Just because they're practices are different them yours you should feel that they are prisoners or being punished. My cousin is a Mennonite (a form of Amish) and she is happy and loved and is peaceful. They live a busy structured life that is very fulfilling. They don't waist time sitting around with idol hand thinking or stupid insulting questions. I think the question goes back to you, are you free in whatever religion you are? Maybe you should become Amish it might give you better manors and a better understanding that just because people are different then you doesn't mean that they are in pain and suffering and need to be rescued. That's what people thought about African Americans and Native Americans. Amish people are loving parent, just like everyone else of different religions.

Amish everyone looks, if something, a techniques a lot less indoctrinating than some extra modern-day Christians. Amish human beings believe that one has to come back to G-d as a understanding human being, and they couldn't be baptized into faith as children. via this, Amish children are inspired to do issues that their father and mother see as sinful even as they are youngsters, and to come across life on the exterior. some Amish youngsters stay unbaptized and opt to stay a fashionable-day life, although the majority will go back to be baptized and stay by way of their non secular code. Is it indoctrination to inform your baby that they could come on your faith purely willingly and easily with knowledge of ways human beings stay, or is it indoctrination to baptize them at delivery and spoon-feed them your beliefs? To me, the latter is indoctrination and the former is reliable parenting.

Hmmm... well they choose to live that way...yes. If you ask them if their happy they will probably say yes. It's somewhat like a only child...an only child doesn't know what its like to have brothers/sisters and they ask that person if the miss not having brothers and sisters...how can he miss something that he never had? Many Amish knows no other way of living...so they never know what their missing if they never had it. I know that the more things that a person has the more stress he has, so in that sense Amish probably live almost a stress free life compared to me, but I wouldn't know what thats like cause I never lived that way before.

Amish people are usually happy because they are content with what they have whether it be family friends or just living in tight nit communities. Although I think their crazy for not wanting anything to do with electric lol, they are some of the nicest people I have ever met.
