It's because of the dry air and friction. Be really careful when you're pumping gas. you can cause a severe explosion.

That is called static electricity.

As you walk across a carpet, electrons move from the rug to you. Now you have extra electrons. Touch a door knob and ZAP! The door knob is a conductor. The electrons move from you to the knob. You get a shock.

We usually only notice static electricity in the winter when the air is very dry. During the summer, the air is more humid. The water in the air helps electrons move off you more quickly, so you can not build up as big a charge.

The same thing applies to your car door.

the only thing that has static electricity is in your heart.....(NOT BY VOLTS EITHER)! Ex. Thats why if you get struck by lightening or have something electrical near water and you get struck or fall in then the volts are higher energy than your heart and your heart cant take it and so you die!

Anyways, you get static by like rubbing a balloon on your head or rubbing your feet on carpet or just in a grocery store when you touch the metal ledges and it shocks you. The only way to lose it is thru rubber or touching another person (lol thats funny), or by wood.

Plus heres an experiment.......take a regular wooden pencil with a full eraser on top and get a paperclip and stick the paperclip in the wall eraser and then stick the paperclip in the wall socket and you wont get shocked.

you get it in winter because the air is dry and electricity travels much easier, wear real rubber soled shoes, that will help.

if the car is the primary problem, get a grounding strap at the auto parts store and install it. it drags and grounds the car.
