My guess was almost like 1 of the answere's here.....I think New Line is Not gonna give up on Peter Jackson anytime soon...I mean, come'on, The success of the trilogy has earned them gazillion $$$$$$$$.....Who's gonna be stupid enough to let him go?

I think there was nothing wrong with Ian Mackellan. He was a fun Gandalf the Grey. Sean Connery is more of the mysterious type and Gandalf is not like that exactly. He was more of deceptively simple. The Hobbit is not as dark as Lord of the Rings and it would be a betrayal of the book if the movie tried to make it like that.

By the way, I heard Peter Jackson will not be making the Hobbit movie due to disagreements with the profit sharing of the LOTR movies. But there can be more developments. New Line might not actually let him go.

Just for the record, it's Ian McKellen (unlike so many of the previous answers...). Sean Connery was the first choice for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings as New Line Cinema believed they needed a major star to capture the audience's attention. Connery however turned down the role as he wasn't able to understand the books.

Just so you know Sean Connery turned it down....The most money for a single role in history... and Ian is perfect in the part. There has been alot of different answers to whether or not Jackson will or will not direct. I read recently that the lawsuit has been dealt with and Jackson will be directing...but who knows for sure...all this stuff changes bye the minute...so I'll believe it when I see it.

Well, I used to think Sean Connery was "the man", but I recently saw some Barbara Walters special where he says it's ok to hit a woman when she become "disobedient". So F him.
