My kids got me computer..must have done a 90 day trial..was out of town --today my computer said these four things expired 4 days ago.

McAfee SpamKiller,
McAfee Privacy Service
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
McAfee VirusScan

It show my antiabuse and antispam killer as red (antivirus index and antihacker index still are green)

Virus span and personal firewall plus are still protected, while privacy service and spamkiller are expired.

Are there any free comparable protections out there..also to reinstate all, how much is it..is it $29.95 for each one or for all of them?

If you give a free program, do you have link for download..is it permantly free or temporary?

Please help.

Hi there,

Unless you really cannot afford to pay for a security solution, I would avoid free programs such as AVG, Spybot and Adaware. Shockingly these three programs used in conjunction now protects you from less than 60% of the threats out there today. In all seriousness, these programs (especially spybot and adaware) are no longer good enough to be your only protection against viruses, spyware and adware (as well as trojans, rootkits and other nasties). They used to be great programs a couple of years ago, but have now been overtaken by programs with next-generation approaches.

Looking at the latest mainstream protection scores it's currently Kaspersky that comes out on top (although seems to generate a high number of false positives), ahead of Norton and then McAfee. However, these scores are all currently dwarfed by another program called Prevx1. This is an all-in-one-solution that protects against all forms of infection (virii, spyware, adware, trojans, rootkits, etc), and has proven to have the strongest protection and clean-up capabilities of all security products available today.

Besides being inherently stronger than conventional security products, Prevx1 also protects against new malware threats that most popular security products do not. Regular security products have to catch a new piece of malware, test it in the laboratory, before creating a signature and making it available for their product to download to your PC - probably once a day at best. During this time, your PC is not protected. Prevx1 however, works in a completely unique way meaning it defends your PC from new malware from the instant it is first seen anywhere in the world - even without signatures and downloadable updates.

This alone is what makes Prevx1 currently the best security solution you can get.

Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!

1. For your Anti-Virus.........................

Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

2. For your Firewall......................

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even a lot of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.

And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............

Pick and choose at least 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

Spybot Search and Destroy:

Ewido:

Adaware SE:

SUPERAntiSpyware:

Windows Defender:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place...................

SpywareBlaster:

Great luck!

Uninstall all your McAfee products. Here are my recommended apps for your pc, all are free and will never expire. Some you will need to register with the manufacturer but that's all there is.

AntiVirus: Avira Antivir
http://www.free-av.com/
AntiSpyware: Spybot Search&Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Microsoft Window Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
FireWall: Zone Alarm
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za

I have tried all kind and these softwares are really good. I have more apps like that on my pc but that should get you up and running.

You should download all the software, whose links I have given:
AVG: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1

Anti-spyware:
1.SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...

2.Windows Defender (only for genuine Windows XP): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download/CPF_Setup_2.0.0.1.exe

All these are free for lifetime. Just make sure that they stay updated, keep the resident shield of AVG and real-time protection of W.Defender active and scan your computer once every 1 or 2 weeks. In case you don't have genuine Windows, you can get Spyware Terminator in place of Defender. It has also a real-time protection, you can activate it. But it also has an embedded anti-virus; don't activate that because it will fight AVG. Even SpyBot has got its resident shield(Tea Timer), but its irksome.
