I fear the dark. I see men with knifes and people staring at me in the dark even though they don't exist.

I am 41 years old and until very recently I never felt comfortable sleeping with the lights off... so I slept with my light on and slept comfortably right through the night.

Honestly if something scares the heck out of you then don't keep scaring yourself by forcing yourself into the situation. There is no shame in having fear. Fear is a reasonable human response.

Psychologists can help you to deal with your fears and it can be helpful to use a psychologist for that.

A previous answerer told you the main clue to what is happening and how you see men with knives etc. It is your mind seeing shapes, textures, hearing sounds and trying to make sense of it all and giving you the explanation that you will find.

I spent many nights getting out of bed and finding out what exactly it was that causes the shadows and shapes in my room. A towel on a peg swaying in the breeze, a curtain moving in the breeze, a cupboard door open a little..... lots of things....

I did buy two very large dogs and kept them in my room over night while I was learning to sleep with the lights off......but then I had five acres for them to run around in during the day too.

There are, in my beliefs, spirit beings that can and do visit us. If you think this is what is happening to you and if they are scaring the heck out of you simply tell them to leave. They will.

The mind tries to make shapes in the dark and give structure to a unstructured environment. what you see is an optical illusion. You want to get over the fear try a closet or something close the door and build up the time. Just make sure you don't lock yourself in :) Try taking everything out of your room to get rid of the shapes.
getting over the dark is not easy. prayer helps, meditation, night light.

Concentrate on happy moments you had.
Sometimes fear comes from fake illusions.Check your imaginations first because u said u know that they dnt exist also.
The fact that you know they dnt exist then there's no reason to fear.
Dnt sleep in the dark. Have lights to ur room then.

Keep a light on--get a little night light. get a big ol' dog. get a roommate.

take a self-defense course.

night time IS scary--leaves so much more to our imaginations. maybe you watch too many scary TV shows/movies. what you put in your brain is what it will spit out in the gaps.
