What kinds of things do typical horror movies construct?

For example, they construct evil characters, etc.
I need to come up with a few and having some difficulty. Please feel free to share what you think movies in this genre "construct". 10 pts for best answer!

99% of ALL horror movies have what I call the 'Obligatory Movie Cat', a scene with a cat in it. Either just sitting there, flying through a window, running past. Sometimes they won't show the cat, but you'll hear one! Next horror movie you watch, be on the lookout for the Obligatory Movie Cat! He's always there ;-)
