Well that is because that is what we want to call it, and handball was already taken. Also, when the game was first played it was more of a rugby type ggame and maybe that is where it comes from.

Uh, sir, in America, AMERICAN football is "real" football in terms of popularity compared to "soccer". It's not even close.
I'd say American football is 10,000 times more popular in America than soccer.
Or let me put it this way: a young man playing football in high school or college is going to have a lot more status on campus than one playing soccer. I don't agree with it but it's a fact.
You obviously are not familiar with American sports culture.

hmm i love football but the real football is spelled Futbol. Whats so damm many about a bunch of guys on the field in pads and a helmet playing for maybe 10 seconds at a time before taking a 20 or 30 second break. I do agree that they are very talented athletes but if your talkin endurance Futbol players will kick the **** out Football players. and who said soccer is played by 7 year olds. whens the last time you saw a football game being played in brazil, iraq, trinidad? how about england, argentina? no didnt think so. whether you like it or not soccer is the most popular sport in the world and for a few days every 4 years, the entire world is brought together and captivated by the world cup. I played soccer for 9 years and over the course i broke 4 fingers, and i broke (on other players) 2 noses not to mention how many concussions i dished and received.
and i do think its stupid taht football in america hardly touches
anyones foot.
and i am american and i have lived here all my life.

Why isn't "UK football" called "headball"? If Americans called soccer football how would we distinguish between the two?

We are tired of this question. Go away.
But if you must know, real football is a man's game played in mud and cold. Soccer is a game 7 year olds play until they discover a sport they like better. Real football involves a good measure of trash talk as one would expect in a man's game. One bit of trash talk in the world cup and the French star got all upset and got himself thrown out of the game.

You're just trying to stir things up. We Americans will never concede that soccer is the real football. It is the great American sport and we love it by any name.

Alright check this out. Americans rule, we decide what it to be called football or soccer. Not 2nd or 3rd rate countries. Besides don't only girls play soccer. Oh I'm mean European football.

I get what you're sayin dude, and I love soccer, but don't call it "real football." All you have to do is watch one soccer match and one football game and you'll realise which sport is "real football" played by "real men"
