If your fish are losing scales for no apparent reason (such as breeding) then it is commonly found to be caused from Myxosporidiosis a disease of goldfishes.
The only treatment for this is to keep doing water changes and get rid of the parasites. You may also increase the temperature of your tank and add methanol blue 10 drops per gallon, it will help speed up recovery

Scale loss is almost always caused by injury, due to fighting with other fish, or from hitting sharp rocks in the tank. Goldfish do fight, so watch the one that isn't losing scales! Also keep an eye on the one that is losing scales, and make sure he isn't scratching up against the rocks. That could be a sign of a parasite like "Ich" which looks like little grains of salt on the body and fins.

Mine did the same thing! Watch for infection after because the skin is exposed and my red cap got a little case of inflammation. Unfortunatly you can't prevent it. Mine lost a scale while swimming with my butterfly koi who loves to play. Brushing against the decorations or gravel too hard will also cause a scale to fall off. But don't worry your prized Oranda(I know my baby is) will be fine and barely even notice as it will grow back eventually.

Mela-Fix is a natural remedy that helps fish regrow fins and scales. Most good pet stores sell it. I use it for my fish if they lose some scales or finnage due to agression.
Regrowth takes some time and the scales will start out smaller than the original, but they do grow back if it is not a disease. Fins start out white, but change to the original coloration as they continue to grow out.
Good luck.

do you mean just one scale is missing? this happens, sometimes they come back sometimes not. if yu mean loosing a bunch of scales it's probably due to a parasite...

sometime lower water temperature also may cause scale losing, oranda goldfish are fancy goldfish therefore they cann't live in very lower water temperature like other goldfish (comet and shubunkin). be sure that your aquarium have heater during winter.
