We all know that drinking WHILE pregnant is a big no-no, as it contributes to all kinds of birth defects. However, can heavy drinking years BEFORE pregnancy lead to birth defects as well?

A few years back I read an article about a study that was conducted regarding the children of alcoholic FATHERS. It stated that the damage done from excessive drinking can be found on a genetic level.

My ex-husband was both an alcoholic and abused drugs for years before we had our daughter (she'll be 17 next month) and she has always been extremely challenged where school is concerned. His 9 year old also has problems with school, has been held back one year and already needs a tutor for this school year.

My current husband and I have three children (13, 7 & 1) and neither one of us have ever had more than a couple of drinks every so often much less any drug use. The 13 year old was an honor roll student (until she discovered boys) and the 7 year old reads a year ahead of the rest of his class.

Based on my own personal experiences, I've come to the conclusion that an occassional drink is fine, but moderation is the key for heath and safety of yourself and your unborn (future) children.

I have never heard of a baby having a birth defect from someone who drank heavily prior to becoming pregnant. If that was the case then us off springs from our parents would all have problems, since years ago women smoked and drank throughout the pregnancy because they did not know of the risks.

It's unlikely, since the alcohol is completely removed from your system after a few hours. However, heavy drinking can hinder the functions of certain organs which may be under a heavy workload during pregnancy, such as cirrhosis of the liver. that's not something you want while you're pregnant.

It can lead to cirrhosis of the liver in the mother which CAN affect the health of a pregnancy. It can also cause stomach ulcers which WILL act up during pregnancy and cause problems. If the mother has been a heavy drinker during her pregnancy BEFORE she found out she was pregnant there could be problems.

No, but heavy drinking during the first few weeks of pregnancy (before you know you are pregnant) can be damaging. If you are planning on getting pregnant, stop drinking.
