I signed up for a singing competition and I need help picking out two songs.
I'm a high baritone w/ a pretty resonant voice.
I need to pick two musical theatre songs (upbeat and ballad). Any recommendations? I want to do something more contemporary but not overdone.

Thanks!

"somewhere over the rainbow" is always good.

also, "music of the night" from Phantom of the Opera.

You can also try broadway classics like: "Old man River" From "Till the Clouds Roll By", or The Impossible Dream from "Man from La Mancha - The Don Quixote Story"

Ballad:
"This Nearly Was Mine" from South Pacific
"She's My Love" from Carnival!
"Where I Want to Be" from Chess
"The Happy Time" from The Happy Time
"Come Back to Me" or "She Wasn't You" from On a Clear Day You Can See Forever
Lots of stuff from Shenandoah (Like "Mediation" I and II, "I"ve Heard it all Before")

Upbeat:
"Marion the Librarian" from The Music Man
"I Wish I Were in Love Again" from Babes in Arms (it's a duet, but you can just sing it straight through)
"The Sidestep" from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

how about one of my favorite songs "For Once In My Life"
"Fever" would be kind of upbeat and "You Don't Know Me" which is more of a ballad. Those are just a couple suggestions...anyway best wishes w/ the competition

Lots of choices. Try to pick up one or more of "The Singer's Musical Theatre" volumes. (There are now 4.)

A good one that is pretty recent is "If I can't love her" from Beauty and the Beast. There are lots of great ones out there, though!

"I'm Not That Smart" from the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It's a really good one for your voice. It's also very humorous.
Something from Phantom of the Opera is really good.
hmmmm.....maybe Hairspray.
Good Luck
