Al is reduced Br is oxidized

Aluminum is being reduced and therefor is the oxidizing agent. Br, a IIA element, normally carries a charge of -2 but we see it becoming oxidized by it becoming -3.

you simply need to assign oxidation numbers. we start out knowing that Br2 and Al are in their natural state, thus their oxidation numbers are 0. then we look at AlBr3. bromine is a halogen so it has an oxi # of -1 usually. to make up for the -3 from the three bromines, the Aluminum must have a +3 charge. thus the bromine is gaining electrons, reduced, and the Aluminum is losing them, oxidized.
