RE: Update
That's different.
You can walk North on the beach 4.5 mi. from there (a great walk) to get to the place I initially spoke of. Jump in and look around at points along the way you may find your own favorite spot close to the Moon.

About 3.5 mi along the way is an inlet that goes under the hotel row road at the South end that you can check out.
If the beach gets too rough to walk at this point go up to the road and continue to the area I spoke of North of Club Med.

The advertised Ceynotes along the highway are what one answerer was talking about. They are cold (73 degreesF) and dark and you will probably have to go with a guide. No fun but unusual creatures if your into that (I'm not I like sun and blue water).

Get on a bus from your hotel and go South to the last stop on the Hotel row. Walk to the beach and then head South some more to the area just before the Club Med Resort. Great snorkeling but no parking.
If you get a car go down rt 307 1 to 1.5 hrs. to Xelha (shel ha) and Xcaret (esh car ay) Eco Parks. You will pay a daily fee but worth it until you find the little local spots south of Playa del Carmen when you're up to some more remote adventures.
Nice water away from the hotel district.

There are numerous places below Cancun that I know of . Finding a location to "go out on the beach" is tricky. The entrances off the interstate that "look like" resort entrances usually aren't - they are actually entrances to the "community". Snorkeling was "ok". We enjoyed best at "Xel-Ha". Forget Xcaret! Ask people working in your hotel and they'll help you out.

Cancun doesn't have a lot of snorkeling right on the beach. You can do it and you will see some fish, but your best bet would be to make the trip to Cozumel or Isla Mujeres. Tons of snorkeling form the shore in those places.

You can snorkel in fresh water underwater caves called Cenotes near Playa del Carmen and Tulum and all over the Yucatan. It's just like National Geographic!
