Dobie Gray sang the original version of the song in 1973, the rolling stones did it in 1975 and so did others until uncle kracker in 2002

Singer Dobie Gray was the first to have a hit (in 1973) with Drift Away. It was written by Mentor Williams, brother of acclaimed songwriter Paul Williams. Gray had his first hit in 1965 with the original version of "The In Crowd".
