Definitely the Netherlands!

A fairly law-abiding, peaceful people, the whole ethos of the country is based on the traditions of those who are sons of the sea and the soil.

It has been like that ever since the reformation; the religious tolerance of Holland remarkable, at a time when people fled places like England.

What I love about Holland is the fact that they don't have armies of people going around trying to dream up new social laws. Instead, they tolerate most things which don't hurt people, but are quite prepared to come down hard when they do.

Above all, the Hollanders have a live and let live attitude, and people do not constantly look over the shoulders of others to see what they are getting up to. Consequently, they are a people who do not go looking for trouble, or who create law for the sake of it.

Easily the least paranoid country in Europe, Holland is a beautiful place to visit, where people are still quite nice to each other.

However, if there is one thing which indicates just how "free" people are in Holland, then there is one image which always sticks in my mind, and which has nothing to do with drugs, prostitution, two men holding hands as they walk the streets or institutionalised liberalism.

Sit in the middle of almost any city or town, eating a meal sat at a table on the street (when the weather is nice) at 11pm during the summer months. People quietly chat and smile; enjoying what people like to enjoy. Then notice the number of children; some carrying skate-boards and maybe 13 to 15 years-of-age, who walk or bicycle alone or in small groups on their way home; maybe chatting and smiling to their friends.

Their world is not one of constant threat and danger, even in the biggest cities, and there is no more reliable indicator of the essential honesty and goodness to be found in this lovely country.

That is REAL freedom.
