the next solstice will be on December 22 at 12:22am.

the position of the sun will be relative to where you are. for instance, if you are near the equator, it will be different information than if you are in Alaska or Norway.

please see this link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solstice
for some very good information.

There two solstices each year. One occurs around June 21 (+/- on e day). This is called the summer solstice, and is the day that the sun elevation is the greatest. It is also the longest day of the year ( because the sun elevation is so high, it is the day it takes the sun longest to traverse the sky from one horizon to the other). The other solstice occurs on December 21 (again, +/- a day). This is called the winter solstice and is the day of the lowest sun elevation. This is also the shortest day of the year (because the sun elevation is so low, it is the day it takes the sun the shortest time to traverse the sky from horizon to horizon). There are two other interesting dates from a sun elevation perspective -- March 21 is called the vernal equinox (vernal means spring), and September 21 is called the autumnal equinox. These are both days where the length of the day and the night are identical. (Equinox comes from the Latin words 'equus' (equal) and 'nox' (night).
