If you want smaller classes and/or religion in your life, private universities is the way to go. Public schools can't be religious due to our laws.

As usual, it depends.
However, there is research that shows that if a students gets into both an elite private school and a public school, he or she will not end up any worse (I think as measured in longer term earnings) if going to the public school than if he/she had gone to a private school.
Of course, there are other ways in which there may be differences. For example, you may get more personal attention and life-changing mentoring at a smaller (often private) school where not so many students are competing for the attention of the instructors.

Private universities and colleges are more expensive than state universities. I went to a private college, and I really enjoyed the education I got there. It all depends on your preferences.

People at private Universities like to pretend they are better than people at public Universities. Look at schools like UC Berkeley, Univ of Michigan, U Mass, UCLA, UNC, Clemson, U of VA, GA Tech, U of Wisc, etc. They are all great Universities and they are all public.
You should chose a school based on what fits you best, not whether or not it is private.
