Traditionally, it is the third Thursday in November. And the meaning of Thanksgiving....It is celebrated in honor of the Indians helping the Pilgrims through the winter. Its just a day we can celebrate everything we are blessed with, though we should do the same every day.

I'd go with the 4th Thursday in Nov. explanation for the when of the American Thanksgiving. However the why is that it was an official Holiday actually signed into law by Abraham Lincoln. The pilgrim connection is a controversial one. It is widely believed that had it not been for the guidance of the Native Americans the Mayflower colonists that landed at Plymouth would have not survived as well as they did. And they were known to have had a commemorative feast. It is kind of the folklore of why thanksgiving started but it is much more now.

Christmas in the US is more likely to be celebrated according to your specific ethnic traditions such as Native American, European and African American. (sorry no offence to any group left out of the example). May of us are only 1,2 or 3 generations from our roots in other nations.

The last Thursday of November. And yes most of us have turkey for Christmas dinner too. Thanksgiving was a tradition that was started by the Pilgrims after they had landed here in America. The Indians and Pilgrims had a big feast to celebrate the bounty of the season and friendship.

It is the last Thursday in November. Most people I know do not have turkey for x-mas too. Believe me most of us don't even like the dry turkey. X-mas we always have ham and since my family is Italian we have nice stuff shells, home made sauce and meatballs!! My girlfriend however who lives in Brooklyn is originally from Trinidad and they have curry shark and such for X-mas. Different cultures eat what they like. But certainly the majority does not have turkey on x-mas. The story book origination of Thanksgiving is when pilgrims from places such as England came to America and made friends with the Indians and shared a meal with them as they traded, shared, and gave to each other. In reality the pilgrims slaughtered the Indians, stole their land and belongings, rapped their women and pracitically wiped out an entire race! Happy Holidays! That is why i like Christmas better..the origin is glorious!

We celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday in November. It was first celebrated by early immigrants to this country as a way to give thanks for food and surviving (Pilgrims in 1621).

Many also have turkey for Christmas, and other occasions as well. Personally I prefer to have rib roast.
