First it depends where you live. I'm going to assume you're talking Anchorage, because that's the largest city.
The light is hard to adjust to. Summer can be light all day, and winters days are very short. Light nights can be very hard to adjust to.
The mosquitos are big.
Yes, the winters are cold. It can be REALLY cold (although it can surprise you, too). Summers are pleasant. People there tend to enjoy outdoor activities.
Things are more expensive because of the cost to ship them in. It does sort of balance out with the permanent fund money, though.
It is a pain if you have family that you want to visit outside. It's a long and expensive flight.
Anchorage has malls and all that kind of stuff, but it's still a small city. More and more national chain stores are moving in, but you don't have all the options that you do in other cities. If you want big city excitement, it's not for you. If you are OK with typical suburban everyday boring life, it's really not that different there. Typical except for moose in your yard.
My sister has lived there for about 25 years. My husband and I were in the process of moving up when he got laid off from his job up there. We would still go. It's not for everyone, though. A friend got transferred there from Portland. His wife lasted for a month or so before she left him and went home (he eventually got laid off too and also went back).

The pros are they actually pay you to live there, you get lots of daylight, and the cons are it's cold, your very isolated, and you have lots of bears, and other ferocious wildlife running around. I hear gas is cheaper, and you get a tax break.

Awful bloody cold for the most part and mosquitoes in the rest.
That's not all but I've forgotten the 'pros'.
That's not quite true...The Inland Passage is grand.
