Starting Jan 23rd 2007 (yes the date just recently changed) you will need a passport for Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, Caribbean, S. America, Puerto Rico (yes some airlines are requiring this), etc. This includes flying and driving travels, unlike what another said that it only included flying travels.
For Travel within the 50 US you will not need a passport to fly. You will still just need the drivers license or government issued ID.

No I have answered this twice this week.
http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html
Here's the plan: In January of 2007 you will need a passport to to fly into Canada and back or to Central American and the Caribbean. In January of 208, you will need a passport to drive to/from Canada, Mexico or go by boat or any way at all to any other country and back.
I have never seen proof anywhere that we will need passports to travel within the country.
Where do these rumors come from? Why do so many people believe them?

No, this is not true. Your state ID or drivers license will be just fine. You only need a passport when you travel outside the US.
Believe me, if this was true, we would have heard a LOT about it! People would be scrambling to apply for a passport, we would hear of people who would be unable to travel home or to a hospital in another state as they don't have/can't get a passport....

I seriously doubt it, because if that was the case, I believe the American public would have been notified before now. It wouldn't be a rule that would go into effect immediately without prior notification. I have heard that the President is trying to get legislation passed that would require something like that, but I don't know if it is true. You could write your congressman and ask. You can find anything on Google, just type key words into the search box and check out the sites that come up.
