(assuming that the chalkboard erasers start at the same height) you are right they would infact hit the floor at the same time, the fact that it falls 5m away from the origional point has nothing to do with it, it is just an additional useless piece of info which is there to confuse you.
The reason they hit the floor at the same time is because the vertical components of their velocities start exactly the same, (the horizontal component is completely indipendant of the vertical) so they are under exactly the same gravitational influence from the same starting point.

This one always gets people confused. Gravity is always the same. They will both hit the ground at the same time. I saw this done in my first college level physics class (I had to take 6 for my major) with time lapse photography (lots of shots in a very short amount of time) and in every shot, the objects were at exactly the same height, and they hit at exactly the same time. Yes the total vector of the one that is thrown will be larger, but that is because it has 2 forces working on it. Horizontal from being thrown, and gravity pulling it down at the same rate as the one that is just dropped. It doesn't matter how far the one eraser is tossed, it will always hit at exactly the same time as one dropped straight down.

Yea, it's only during falling straight down vertically that they hit the ground at the same time,and the asnwer is the one being dropped instead of thrown would hit the grounds first.

The both hit the ground at the same time. Horizontal and Vertical forces do not relate to each other. You can separate them out and not affect the situation.
If you throw something horizontally it takes the same time to hit the ground as it would take if you were to just drop something.

my teacher did this exact experiment in class, only with basketballs. he had one student drop one straight down, and he rolled the other off of a shelf.
amazingly, the basketballs hit the ground at the same time!
this is because the two objects share the same mass and acceleration or something.

when you toss or drop.............the vertical component of acceleration or velocity is unaffected.................
