You hear black or brown pride, you aplaud them. You hear white pride, and you frown upon them for being racist. On what grounds is it acceptable for a person to have pride in themselves? Is it color or race? I personally disapprove of boasting about your race or ethnicity. To be proud of something, you first must earn it. Even if you have something to boast about, what did race ever have to do with it?

As you may see, I am myself a minority.

This is a good question. I think it stems from the fact that white people have been responsible for some pretty unfair treatment of other races. Not all of us are guilty of it, but as a matter of course in Western countries, we've latched onto political correctness as some sort of pennance for what has happened, rather than focusing on the important things like equal rights.

As a general rule, I think white people are harder on white people than anyone else about stuff like this (wheras other races affected by our less noble acts usually have the sense to address racism itself). I take pride in myself, but not because I'm white, or even because I'm human. My pride is in myself as an individual, and I also have pride in anyone like yourself, who can communicate respectfully about issues like this.

Well it is acceptable to have pride in your self or in your race if your race has accomplished alot in the past. I am proud of who i am and what i am Because i have done so much in my life been through alot and when i say i am proud to be white it's because my family and close ancestors(my family wasn't in America during slavery so i don't wanna hear any rude remarks) have struggled there own struggles just as i have.

I know it's pretty sad b/c asians, blacks, and latinos can have their pride and people are like "Yeah, Go ______!" But when white people say they have pride in their own ethnicity, people are !@#$% about it. I guess people are used to... I wouldn't call it a stereotype... but... b/c there are many times where some white people show their racism to other cultures. History and news mostly show white ppl being racist, [even though we see other cultures being racist to other ethnicity too].

Pride should be based on something you or the group you are affiliated with have done that is special.

I don't have pride in being black, I do however have pride in what black people have accomplished in the face of all they have had to slog through.

I also take pride in my art, my jewelry making, my drumming and holding down the same job for 15+ years.

its a careful balancing act to say white pride. Recent history is still burning in the social conscience. The swastika, a benign tibetan symbol, was corrupted as well.
As a minority myself, to say any kind of racial pride is stupid simply because it only serves to separate groups. Human pride works just as well.

I am proud of being strong in the face of homophobic bigotry - but I'm not proud of being gay. Being gay does not make me mature, funny, sexy or a genius. To be proud of liking having sex with men would be the height of superficiality.

But I am proud of the fact that I am a loving person. And I will fight for the right to love.

Get me?

Even though this is a hot button issue, i tend to agree. I find it disconcerting when people wear their race, or religion/social status/creed, like a badge. It makes any true dialogue on race impossible.

I do not see anything wrong with being proud of who you are or your background as long as you do not put others down in the process.

I am proud to be an Asian American.
