Why do they make me put in bag after scanning? I got so confused the first time because I didn't want to waste plastic. Why does the system not let me proceed. Sometimes even when I put it in the bag, the machine will still be like no you didn't and Id still be stuck. Why does the machine do this?

It is checking the weight of the item to make sure you put it in the bag. I found that the weight sensors never work and it always say that you didn't put the item in the bag. If you don't want to bag the item then you can either touch skip bagging or just place the item in the bagging area. The grocery store self checkout where I shop has a belt you put the items on and this light bar senses the item and then puts it in a bagging collection area. You bag everything at the end.

LOL I understand. I also hate doing self checkout but don't like waiting in line anywhere. I did this today and had the worst time because the scanner was messed up and kept ringing up the items three times when I had only one item so annoying. I was so frustrated and also had trouble getting the stupid thing to give me my cash back. I wish the machine was more like an atm that had the receipt, change, and money insert all in front of you instead of under the counter and the receipt prints in the back of the monitor which makes it confusing. Maybe they will improve those machines soon.

There is a scale under the bag area, that's why you have to put it there. You don't actually have to put stuff *in* the bag, though.

I wonder if you're going to Albertsons. They are the worst. I like self-checkout, but I refuse to use theirs. It always gets stuck in that cycle of "put it in the bag" "take item out of bag."

Those machines are very touchy and can be problematic. If you don't want to use a bag, just place your items on the stand that the bags are on then retrieve them when your transaction is finished.
