I have three children age 10,6 and 3 yrs. I'm assuming you R a 1st time Mom.I think that 'cause I used to worry about my 1st child's development ALOT!! Don't worry,he will sit up in his own time. All children learn how to do things like sitting up in their own time.If you have a high chair put him in it when you feed him, this will help him with his balance. You can prop him up a little but not a whole lot so he can get used to supporting himself. You got to remember babies heads are bigger than the rest of them and it's really hard for them to balance the weight of their heads on their tiny shoulders.Give it time he'll come around and don't stress too much because a book, a friend or a relative says so.YES, IT'S NORMAL.:)The stubborn you'll experience later, he is a boy.lol

No two babies are the same! My son who is now 3 never did crawl, he kinda lept around like a frog lol, as for the sitting up i wouldnt worry because they say 6months they usually start this but its not always true. I remember my son getting his pictures done at 6months and he couldn't sit up, i had to hold him and let go fast for the picture. Your baby is probably scared off losing balance and thats why he can do it when he knows you are close to him. Dont worry about it, he will get the hang of it in no time! take care

babies are different from one another....my son crawled first as well before he was able to sit on his own.. and guess what he started to walk at 9 months old...so just continue doing the "trick" coz that way you are also helping him out..

Babies develop in their own way, they don't have to follow the book.
Mine sat up first by holding my fingers for balance, then did the lean to one side, then would hold himself up with the grocery cart handle, then finally would sit up on his own. He also learned to pull himself up and furniture surf before he bothered crawling.
